A stock KLR5650 can take a hard beating and still get you where you need to go. It is often referred to as the cockroach of motorcycles trading cosmetic appeal for resilience. It can be disassembled with a handful of common tools and parts are easy to find for any road repairs. Both factors are very important when selecting a vehicle for any journey.

Below are all the extra mods I added to ensure me and my bike get anywhere we need to be.

  • Rear Master Cylinder Guard
  • Aluminum Pannier Kit
  • Aluminum Top Box (29 Liters)
  • Engine Protector Plate
  • Radiator Guard
  • Front Skid Protector
  • RAM AquaBox and Mounts (GPS/Phone Holder)
  • Kick Stand Foot Enlarger
  • LED Pannier Lighting Package
  • Automotive 12V Power Outlet
  • Off Road Pegs

A full maintenance routine takes about half a day on a KLR. When getting ready for a long trip its always advised to bring tools for quick fixes that may come up but there is a trade off when it comes to extra weight you need to carry.  If you are preparing for a long trip keep track of the tools that are used when doing general maintenance. Set aside a full day to get intimate with your bike and keep track of your tools. Every tool that touches your bike gets put in a separate road journey pile. This will give you a good idea of what tools you should bring. The last thing you want is forgetting the hex key that removes the panniers when you want to hit a trail.
