The ride to Wawa Ontario was one of the most scenic rides I have been on, there were many bikers enjoying the shallow twisting roads and beautiful landscape along highway 17 through Lake Superior Provincial Park. There were many times I wanted to pull over to mount my head camera to capture the landscape but I needed to get my campsite set up before dark and it was getting late. The highway to Wawa follows a shoreline peninsula where you are constantly travelling to different elevations with huge temperature swings. In the lower elevation the cold air would stay and the temperature would drop to about 15c from 25c in a matter of seconds. I remember getting exited for upward climbs as I began to shiver.
The ride to Wawa marked my first camping night. It’s still obvious I need to work out some inefficiencies as juggling tent setup, cooking, fire prep and bike maintenance had me running around getting frustrated. The mosquitoes seem to get more aggressive and bigger as I move up north and the fact I forgot to bring my mosquito meant I was a nice mosquito feast. The campsite was a nice place with hot showers and potable drinking water. As I explored the camp grounds I met one group of guys that had upwards of 500 beers that they called “The Mission” and offered me a few to help conquer the beer cooler quest. Tomorrow I pull into Thunder Bay so it’s going to be an early night. I don’t have much more time to cross Canada to make it for the Calgary stampede.
